Hi friends! We’ve almost reached the end of the month, which means we’re wrapping up our discussion on structure. Today is the day to ask me any of your questions about story structure or storyboarding. Obviously this is a huge topic and I’ve only begun to scratch the surface, but I’m sure we’ll revisit the topic in the future. In the meantime, let me know your questions.
UPDATE: I've canceled tonight (Wednesday's) write-in because I'm feeling under the weather. You should have gotten an email from Zoom confirming the cancellation. Thanks!
I have a hard time studying story structure and then writing. It's overwhelming for me. I've tried to read several books and I make it half way and then peter out.
Wired for story, by Lisa Cron, Story Trumps Structure, by Steven James and The Kick-Ass writer by Chuck Winding, which is just an entertaining read all be itself. Help!
I hope you are starting to feel better, Jaye! I have been doing so much short story work, that looking at structure for novels is feeling a bit "deer in the headlights" for me. Would love to know some of your fave titles. I did pick up Save the Cat! Writes a Novel and Story Genius, but wonder what else is out there.
I hate structure! But, Vogler's Writer's Journey helped me understand it. Butting the second time 😂, I took it too literally. About a week or two ago, I zoomed a lecture he gave on it. At the very end, after I had re-connected with principles dontchaknow, he says bend it, have fun with it, throw it out, mash it up, etc. What the hell? He had just spent 2 hours lauding the ancient and still used story structure only to say, throw it out. I feel like a hook on the loom came loose. And, ya know what, my new novel is sooooo character driven that plot is very secondary and I intend to go with that.
