Today I used my Modern Witch Tarot deck again. The card that came up is the Six of Cups.
Theme Words: Playfulness, Revisiting the past, Nostalgia, Seeking Solace, Childhood
According to the companion book that came with the Modern Witch deck:
“You’re being called to embrace family and friend with kindness and compassion. Spread your love and sweetness to those you care about, and nurture your connections.”
For your writing:
The six of cups is a card of nostalgia. It reminds us to be grateful for where we came from and the relationships from our past that are special. Ask your main character these questions:
What insights have people from your past taught you? How did they mold who you are today?
Six of cups is also a friendship card. Who are your character’s friends? Is your character a good friend to those around them? How does that impact their story?
Prompts:
Someone gives your protagonist an unexpected gift.
Write a flash fiction piece about a character who goes back home.
A curmudgeon has to spend a day with a precocious kid. Shenanigans ensue.
For Your Creative Journey:
Many of us are spending way more time with our families than we’re used to. Worries about keeping the kids busy so we can work abound. Here’s an idea: Learn from your kids. Incorporate them in your creative process. Kids are great at imagination and creation. Tell a story together. Finger paint. Make paper dolls. Show them some favorite creative play you used to engage in as a kid.
Because here’s the trick of being a creative: It’s all about play. We forget that in our pursuit of accolades and keeping up with the market. But we didn’t start creating because of those things. We started because it was fun. How can you rediscover the fun of creation?
Questions for yourself:
How can you come to your creative work from a fresh perspective? What might renew your sense of joy?
Are you being a good friend? Reach out to people right now. Set up Skype dates or just call someone you haven’t talked to in a while. You might be surprised at how renewing this can be.
Are you being a good friend to yourself? These are scary times. It’s okay if you just need to rest. Beating yourself up for not being productive isn’t helping things. What would you tell your best friend in your position? Do that.
Here are some fun resources to rediscover play this week:
Make a reading fort in your living room. Revisit a favorite comfort read.
Have a kitchen dance party. I often dance while I’m cooking. It’s fun!
When in doubt, make a collage.
