Happy Friday and welcome to May, friends! It’s Tarot time again.
Today I used my Morgan-Greer Tarot deck and the card that came up was Wheel of Fortune.
Key Words: Change, destiny, unexpected turn of events, good luck, karma,
This card reminds us that we aren’t in control. You can set things in motion, and likely have recently consciously or unconsciously, but destiny is at work and you’ll have to accept the outcome.
Because this card is upright, indications are the outcome will be favorable. Changes are coming that will promote growth and learning. Trust the process and try to stay balanced.
For your Stories
Here’s the thing: destiny is tricky when it comes to writing fiction. You characters may have a destiny, but it’s only through their conscious choices and actions that they prove themselves ready and worthy of their destiny. They can’t just sit in their comfort zone and expect destiny to come knocking.
We can’t just wave our hands or throw a deus ex machina at our heroine and expect readers to be satisfied with the outcome. The Wheel of Fortune says to first set the wheel in motion by taking action. If our characters don’t take that first leap of faith, destiny won’t be able to do its work.
Keep in mind, we’re halfway through the Major Arcana here. It’s not the beginning of your character’s journey. This isn’t The Fool—the ultimate leap of faith. This is something that happens about halfway through your story where your character makes a different choice than they would have at the beginning of the story. It’s the mid-point reversal. This is something set in motion following some trials and lessons. It’s your character making a choice that proves they’re growing toward their destiny.
Prompts:
-Write a scene where your character realizes they’ve been going after the wrong goal.
-Use one of these key words as inspiration for a flash fiction piece: Hubris. Initiation. Games of chance.
For Your Creative Journey:
Writers love control. We get to build our own worlds and move characters around like pawns. We get to give happy endings to situations that in real life may have had a sadder outcome.
But we don’t control very much otherwise. Hell, sometimes we barely have control over the characters, am I right?
The Wheel of Fortune reminds us that there is no guaranteed outcome for our creative projects. Our job is to create. What comes of those creations is out of our hands. You can be a bestseller one day and not be able to sell even a dirty limerick the next. You can experience a string of failures and then suddenly a project takes off like a rocket.
Whether the publishing outcome works out or not, by focusing on creating and enjoying the process you’ll win every time.
Your job, babe, is to do the work anyway. You job is to set the wheel in motion. It’s not an act of faith; it’s an act of love.
Today’s Mantra: I create my own luck.
Questions to ask yourself:
-How are you spinning the wheel at the moment?
-How are your horizons expanding right now?
-Is there something you need to resolve in order to show up for your creative work?
